Meet your Thyroid.

Hello friends, It's another week on our health segment. We will be taking a look at the Thyroid gland. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The thyroid gland is about 2 inches long and lies in front of the windpipe. The thyroid has two sides called lobes on either side of your windpipe, and is usually connected by a strip of thyroid tissue known as the Isthmus. In some persons, the Isthmus is absent and instead they have two separate thyroid lobes. Functions of the Thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is part of what we call the endocrine system  which is made up of glands that produce, store and release hormones into the bloodstream so the hormones can reach the body cells. The thyroid uses iodine from the food you eat to make two main hormones; 1.Tri-iodo thyronine.(T3) 2.Thyroxine(T4) These hormones go into the blood stream and create certain effects; 1.The thyroid hormones control metabolism, this they do by causing the cells to...

Be your own support system.

Yesterday i was just reflecting on how far I'd come in life, the pains, disappointments, the 'you don't look like you'll amount to anything' kind of attitude, the deliberate disregard for your efforts at making your life count and a whole lot of things.  One thing that made me glad was that in spite of all that, I made sure I protected myself because I realized that's all I've got really. I've showed up and there's nothing anyone can do about it. God didn't need their permission to bring me here. I'm  glad I didn't give up, and that's why I'm here to tell you that in your journey to greatness you will encounter this. It's the price you will have to pay. Many won't believe in you or what you do. Ignore them, keep going, don't look back. If people choose to oppose you do not join them to oppose yourself. If they choose to be your enemies don't join them to be your own enemy. Love yourself. L...

Be Satisfied with YOU

As we strive daily to see that we make something good an worthwhile out of our lives, it is also important that we cultivate the habit of being content with what we have at a given time. We live in an era that is characterized by so much drive to 'make it', appear rich and successful and all of that. Now don't get me wrong, there isn't any thing wrong with wanting the goodies of life. What is wrong is when we begin to lose peace, joy and gladness because of what we haven't had yet. Contentment is a priceless virtue to cultivate if you must go far in life. It is simply an attitude that says 'I'm grateful for how far I have come and for the blessings and favors I got, while looking forward to a better tomorrow.' This attitude will deliver you from needless competition and that pressure to want to act like what you're not. It confers peace on you and gives your mind the needed rest, vigour and clear sightedness to plan for your to...

Your journey before you arrived here.

Hi esteemed blog followers. How's the week been? Today I'm just going to attach a video here for you to see how a baby is conceived up until delivery time. I decided to do this today so we can appreciate the gift of our bodies. I always say that the human body is a masterpiece and a living wonder. As a physiologist and medical imaging scientist I've never ceased to be amazed at how it is structured and how it functions. So today just sit back, watch how this  wonder that houses your spirit called the Human body develops from conception to birth. Video credit: drugs bank information.

Have a grip on your emotions.

You know we get to pick several life lessons from everyday activities and this one I'm about to share happened to be one of such.  I happened to be in a public transport one day  goingto work and just a few minutes after we took off, one of the passengers suddenly started shouting that there was pepper eyes and angrily asked that anyone eating anything should stop because she believed that was the cause of the eye pain.  I suggested that maybe it was smoke from the silencer of the car, but she insisted that it was pepper.  I decided to do a quick survey of those in the car to see if really anyone was eating any thing but didn't really see anyone at least from my own observation.  Everyone simply ignored her and at the end she had to become quiet. I began on think on that outburst she did. Yes she had something suddenly enter her eye and was causing some discomfort but did that warrant such behavior? I believe it is important that as people we should ...

The Ear as an organ of Balance.

Each time someone asks us what our organs of hearing are, without thinking twice, we mention the ear which of course is true. But not so many of us also know that aside from performing the function of hearing, the ear is also responsible for our sense of balance in body movement in collaboration with the skeletal muscles and the brain. This is what we hope to dissect in this article. ---------------------------------------------------------- The ear is a sensory organ that picks up sound waves, allowing us to hear. In addition to that it is also essential to our sense of balance. The Organ of Balance. Remember to LIVE IN THE MOMENT sometimes.

Sometimes while planning and trying to make our lives count we tend to forget to pause and notice what is currently happening around us. From time to time deliberately take time out to notice what is going on around you. Take time to just live in the moment and don't feel guilty about it. Life is in phases; yesterday, today and tomorrow. Learn not to sacrifice one for the other. Acknowledge yesterday and what it taught you but don't pitch your tent there. Live in today, know what is happening in the now, its how life is lived. One today at a time. Remember tomorrow, plan for it but don't leave today and go live there. Today is where the building block for tomorrow is laid. Live a balanced life. Let your yesterday, today and tomorrow not clash. Let each have their rightful place. Photo:styleschooltv.com

When they Hate just keep Getting Better.

It is important that we are aware that as we begin to make some meaningful progress, we will face some stiff opposition from those who would rather we remained in the mud together. Such people will blackmail you in every way they can, because your success is going to be a reminder that they refused to pay the price to get the life of their dreams and you were courageous enough to do so. Your success will always expose the unwillingness of some to make their lives count and so they will attack you vehemently. So as you keep at your journey towards a better life remember this will be part of the package. I just thought i should chip this in so you won't be too surprised or upset when it happens. Also remember that most often than not it will start from those who are so close to you. Therefore the way to handle it is not to feel guilty, afraid, angry or give up. The best response is to keep doing what you've been doing. Get better at it and sooner or later, the...

Live for Today but Plan for Tomorrow.

Some people live just for today and do not remember to, or just decide not to put some effort in making their tomorrow count and yet expect it to yield them some good fruits. While it is good to live one day at a time, it is also important to know that the future is an empty womb that will only birth when a seed is planted into it. How would you like your tomorrow to be? Let that determine how you prepare. When we say prepare for tomorrow what do we really mean? It means establishing meaningful relationships with people who will be of help in moving us towards our goals. It may mean making some financial decisions to invest to secure a better tomorrow. It may mean going back to school to upgrade. It may mean, cutting down on wrong habits that are detrimental to your physical and mental health so you can live longer. It many mean investing your time in raising your children to become great world changers. It may mean taking those steps to start that business, mak...

What happens in you in a Heartbeat?

Today we'll study something interesting. We want to peep into our hearts and see what really happens each time we feel our hearts beating. It is called the CARDIAC OR HEART CYCLE. -------------------------------------------------------------------- The Cardiac Cycle. Describes all the activities of the heart through one complete heartbeat; that is through one contraction and relaxation of the ventricles and atria. Phases of the Cardiac Cycle. The cardiac cycle is majorly divided into two known as the systole and diastole. The Diastole is the phase where the atria and ventricles are in a relaxed mode. - During this phase blood is pumped into both straight from the large veins of systemic circulation; ( superior and inferior Vena Cava) and the pulmonary veins. - Blood fills the ventricles passively as both the mitral and tricuspid valves that are at located between the ventricles and atria are lifted. - The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary vein...

Step OUT

Happy week and Happy New month people! It's the last lap of the first quarter already. Time indeed waits for no one. Let me just share a little story today to encourage you. For some years I had this thing in mind to start a blog but usual i just looked at myself and said I couldn't. It kept coming year after year and I kept giving the same kind of excuse. Then sometime last year some friends organized an online class for those who wanted to begin blogging and I signed up not sure I would do anything with the information. But the very first class changed everything. I suddenly realized that it could be done and in two days I set up this and the rest is history. I just want to challenge today, what is that thing you've been putting off and telling yourself that you can't achieve? Step out and do it. All that ' I can't do it' is simply fear speaking. Just get up and do it even if you still feel that fear. It will eventually go away and ...

What Are Your Motives for Seeking a Good Life?

One of the reasons I love to read the Bible is not necessarily for religious reasons but all for the daily life lessons I get to learn from it. This morning I read a passage in James 4 that struck a chord in my mind and want to share some lessons I got from there;    AMP: What leads to strife (discord and feuds) and how do conflicts (quarrels and fightings) originate among you? Do they not arise from your sensual desires that are ever warring in your bodily members? You are jealous and covet [what others have] and your desires go unfulfilled; [so] you become murderers. [To hate is to murder as far as your hearts are concerned.] You burn with envy and anger and are not able to obtain [the gratification, the contentment, and the happiness that you seek], so you fight and war. You do not have, because you do not ask. AMP: [Or] you do ask [God for them] and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [whe...

Formation of the what is known as the Neural tube begins. This neural tube is the progenitor organ that develops into the brain and spinal cord, in short the nervous system. During this process certain malformations can occur that leads to what is called Neural Tube Defect. Definition:  Neural Tube Defect is said to occur when the neural tube fails to close completely and failure of this closure leads to two main types of neural tube defects which are Spina Bifida and Anencephaly.   1. Spina Bifida. In spina bifida, the fetal spinal column doesn't close completely. There's usually a nerve damage that causes at least some paralysis of the legs. The effects of S...
