My Ten Year Journey in the Nigerian Labour market 4

Last week I talked about my appointment as principal and the challenges I faced. Today let me talk about how I handled them. For the gross indiscpline and late coming, I made sure there was some punishment for late coming. It wasn't there before. Wasn't something harsh, no flogging but strong enough to send the message across. And it stopped. I now also decided to make the assembly time an interesting one. I had some outlines from my church Bible studies then that had stories of people in history who made some mark like Abraham Lincoln and the rest. So each day after the regular assembly i read those stories to them and insipired them. That also helped reduce the late coming as they were always eager to always listen to those stories. Then school fees owed. It was tough. I worked hand in hand with the headmaster on this. We sent them home and also met with some of the parents who told us why they had challenges paying. We designed a system for those of them who w...

Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding: Causes and How to Identify it.

Dysfunctional  uterine bleeding that is not associated with the normal monthly cycle is one common case that keeps popping up among women of reproductive age.  This post is aimed at educating women about what it is and what to do when they experience such.  What is Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding? It is no news that once a woman has attained puberty,  she begins to experience the regular menstrual cycle that involves bleeding once in that cycle which is monthly. Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding therefore is any kind of bleeding from the female reproductive tract that occurs outside of this normal monthly cycle. Causes of Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding. 1. PCOS( Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). This is an endocrine disorder that affects the ovary causing it to produce lots of cysts and by extension excess female hormones such as the estrogen and progesterone. This excessive production will lead to a distortion of the normal levels required in the body a...

The Crisis of Identity.

When we went from placing value on what really matters to just external things humanity fell so hard and broke it's back. The impact of that fall is why we have so many people with low self esteem and terrible identity crises. Much more than failing economies, hunger, disease, widespread poverty is the crisis of the individual.  The crisis of seeking validation, of feeling some sort of worth and value. That inner questioning and probing that requires an answer. Sadly many people do not have the answer to that inner question. They then turn to things, all kinds of external things and invite them to come in and answer that inner man. Unfortunately the externals can't do so. They lack the capacity to answer those questions and the individual in a bid to either answer or silence that question seeks more of these externals and at every point they keep saying No, we don't have the answers. The individual is now confused, what do I do? Then he sights another human li...

My Ten Year journey in the Nigerian Labour Market 2

This year 2019 marked exactly ten years when I officially joined the labor market in my country Nigeria. This was after my National Youth Service.  This is a one year compulsory service to the nation that every graduate goes through before officially going to the labor market. I began the series by talking about my dad's career life because of the impact it had on my own journey through my career  so far.  So I'll be sharing my story and experiences in the different places I've worked and the lessons I have learnt. ----- ------ ------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------ ------- During my NYSC days, we were constantly bombarded with the unemployment statistics. We were told how jobs were becoming scarce. This was 2009 o. If only they knew it would get this bad, they would have spared us the news then.😁 Naturally that created fear in our hearts but I always did something each time I heard those words. I always told myself I would find a job despite the scary sta...

My Ten Year Journey in the Nigerian Labour Market: In honor of My Dad's Working Life.1

My Dad's birthday was on the 15th of October. I write this post in honor of his impact on my life as a career person. I hope you find valuable lessons from it. -- ---- --- ---- ---- ---- ------ ------- ------- ------ ----- My Dad's  career life was in two major phases. First phase; he worked in the textile industry for close to two decades. Second phase; he went into the academia and remainded there till his demise. The first phase of his working life was in the textile industry. As at the early 80s way into the late 90s this industry flourished greatly in this country till it was grounded. He worked with the Funtua Textiles back then in Katsina state where they specialized in making plain cotton fabrics of different colors and texture and also cotton bed sheets of different kinds. Luckily for my dad he got a job in line with what he studied in school which was Textile science and technology. The job was very demanding especially since they worked with lots of ...

A Note to Abusers.

One of the most important things to note especially in these days that we live is how healthy your emotional life is. Today at work i had a case refered to me on domestic violence against a pregnant woman by her spouse. As I checked the woman and baby i began to wonder in my heart what would be so bad that a man would beat up his heavily pregnant wife.  In recent times I've seen lots of cases of abuse at an alarming and scary rate. It's like an outbreak that we must deal with. Truth be when a person's emotional life is not in order, that person may become a disaster to himself and all around him. A lot has been said about how victims should safe guard themselves against such people so I won't dwell much on that today. Let me say something to abusers though. We all know that you do what you do because deep inside you're a broken vessel. Broken by whatever circumstance it is that brought you where you are. People who hurt end up hurting others we ar...

Your Carbon can become Diamond.

Diamond is the hardest subtance known on Earth. Diamond is formed from 'ordinary' coal that has undergone intense heat and pressure over thousands of years. When it is finally formed, it is worth a fortune. Only the wealthy can afford it. What are you going through today? Intense heat and pressure that won't go away no matter what you do? Watch out, your 'ordinary' carbon is becoming a diamond already. And when you're done, you'll be worth a fortune.  The size of your trials are the prophecies of your tomorrow. Don't despair.

The Esther, Hamman, Mordecai Models of Leadership.

This morning while going through the book of Esther I picked some very interesting lessons on Leadership and Politics I'd like to share below. -- --- --- ---- --- ---- ----- -------- ------- ------- ------- ------ - Esther on a normal day never thought her becoming a queen had anything to do with sabing a nation or group of people. She probably thought she was just lucky to have been chosen by the great King Ahaseurus to become his queen. Until her people got threatened with death, then she woke up through the help of her Uncle. - Haman was a typical political or should I say government official. Full of himself, favored by the ' Oga at the top', the King. The favor got into his head so much that he would go home, gather his friends and wife just to boast of how close he was to the king. It is was never recorded that he used that position to speak for anyone before the king for help or anything kind of favor. He had an enemy, Mordecai. That one wouldn't...

You're being Expanded.

For over a year now, I've experienced some major shake ups in virtually every area of my life. These series of ups and downs really started getting to me at some point, which is a normal human reaction. But thankfully I slowly kept scaling through each one that came. Thanks to God. Yesterday while going back to my work station, I was thinking about some of these things and I found some answers right on that journey. Usually my route to work takes me through the Zaria- Kaduna expressway which recently have been under construction as the roads are being expanded. While looking at the work going on in the following thoughts passed through my mind; - The road under construction, was already an existing road built during the military administration. But because it had to be expanded the existing structure had to go. - Lots of scraping of the old tar with heavy equipment had to be done. As a result the road has become large stretch of red sand and no longer looked ...

Finish Your Fight.

While perusing through the book of Esther i stumbled on something quite interesting I'd love to share here.  Esther was of royal blood. She was a grand daughter of King Saul. No wonder she ended up marrying a King.😁 Hamman was a grandson of King Agag. Now Agag was one of the kings God told King Saul to wipe out. Saul spared that King and some of his household. Eventually when he brought him back God was displeased with his disobedience and had Samuel get another king. Samuel was the one who eventually killed Agag. Then many centuries later. Haman son of Agag meets Mordecai son of Saul and the old battle is revived.  Hamman now wants Mordecai and all the Jews wiped out. Divine intervention is what eventually saves them. Lessons. - As a parent what you do or do not do will travel down your generation unborn. Both Esther and Hamman were not born when it started but because Saul didn't deal with the issue headlong, his children ended up having to fight that bat...

Face what scares you.

Many a times the biggest set back go our progress is FEAR. Fear is that inner voice that tells us things we cannot do. It is that emotion we fell when faced with negative circumstances. That feeling of wanting to give up and run away rather than face the situation. What is it that you planned you were going to do but have not attempted because of fear of failing or losing something? As we keep running this race called LIFE, face that thing, rise up and just do it forgetting how you feel and you'll be surprised how much you would have accomplished by the end of the year. There is something great awaiting you at the other side of fear.

Be Patient with You.

We live in the days of motivational speeches, quotes and talks that encourage us to pursue our goals and achieve something worthwhile in life.  While this is true and also important, we should remember that life is in phases and as such there will be need for patience when what we are hoping to see materialize doesn't at the time we hope it would. Life is a journey. Take your time. Do your best and then learn to rest and let things fall into place. Love yourself enough to be patient with your progress level. You're doing just fine, trust me.

An overview of the Male Reproductive System.

On our table today we have an interesting menu specially prepared for our men. 😀. It's common knowledge that we focus so much on the reproductive well being of the female and this is because of the unique ability of women to get concieve and pregnant with a child. But often times we hardly talk to the men about their own reproductive health as though they are not part of this journey. So today we will start by familiarizing ourselves with the basic structures and functions of the male reproductive system. To help us achieve this I've added a simple five minute video with beautiful and simple animations to help us understand what they are and how they work. Are you a man and you are not necessarily familiar with how your reproductive organs function? Then this is for you. Happy Viewing. Credit:youtube.

Juvenile Diabetes.

Juvenile Diabetes seems like a strange word because that disease is usually associated with adults. But in this article we will look at what that really means.  Sometime last month i was chatting with a friend on issues of diet and she went on to tell me about her observation on how a lot of modern parents in a bid to make their kids feel good or pampered stuff them with all kinds of unhealthy snacks coated with so much sugar and unhealthy preservatives. I remember also reading an article few years back about how exercises were forcefully added to school curriculums in one of these advanced countries in the middle east as they observed lots of their children coming down with obesity and diabetes. These two scenarios prompted me to write this post especially for parents, to mind what their children eat. --------- ------------- ------------ ---------- ------------- What is Juvenile Diabetes? This is a chronic condition in children in which their pancreas produces little o...
