What goes on during Erection /Ejaculation?

Today on our menu is something for the men and also the women in their lives. The Word erection is nothing new to majority of us.

We all know it is the response of the male sex organ to sexual stimuli in readiness for the sex act but for many that's where it ends.

So on this segment today we seek to draw back the curtain and let everyone in on what really goes on behind the scenes in the body that leads to this powerful response.
So grab a plate of pop corn and join us on this exciting ride.
------- -------- --------- -------- ------- ------- ------- --

 What is Erection?
Is simply the hardening, stretching and standing erect of the penis away from the body as a result of increased blood flow to the organ.

The internal structure of the Penis.

The penis is made up of two major chambers called the CORPORA CAVERNOSA which runs the length of the organ and contains a maze of blood vessels.
There's also a third layer that surrounds the urethra( passage for urine and sperm) known as the Corpus spongiosus.

The Process.
- An erection starts primarily in your brain. It is the primary initiator of the process.

- Something you think about, see, feel, smell or hear can start up that process.

- These stimuli cause the nervous system to release certain chemicals to the blood vessels in the penis and cause the large arteries to relax and one of such chemicals is NITRIC OXIDE.

- Following the relaxation of the arteries, more blood is allowed to flow into the penis and fill up the vessels and this is what leads to the sudden stretch and hardening of the penis.

-The veins on the penis close up and blood is trapped under pressure to allow the erection to be sustained.

Ejaculation :
This is the process of expulsion or release of semen following a height of sexual excitement in males.

The Process.
- When you're aroused, tubes called the Vas deferens squeeze sperm from the testes towards the back of the urethra.

- The seminal vesicles also release their secretions there.

- The urethra senses the sperm and fluid mixture (semen).

- At the height of sexual excitement, it sends signals to your spinal cord which also sends signals to the muscles at the base of the penis.

- These muscles contract powerfully and in quick successions, about every 0.8seconds.

- These contractions forces the semen out of the penis as the individual climaxes.

Now haven seen the processes involved in this phenomenon, it is important to know anything that affects any of the processes can lead to the various male reproductive problems like erectile dysfunction.
In our next post we shall look closely at all of that.
