What is constipation?
Constipation is condition of the digestive system where an individual faces infrequent bowel evacuation, or where the faeces are hard and small or where passage of stool is hard and painful.
This occurs because the colon has absorbed too much water from the food in the colon
( large intestine).
Causes of Constipation.
- Lack of dietary fibre in food.
- Physical inactivity.
- Dehydration.
-Medications eg narcotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants.
-Consumption of diary products by others.
- Over use of laxatives.
- Pregnancy.
- Resisting the urge to poop.
- An underactive thyroid.
- Problems with nerves and muscles of the digestive system.
- Ageing.
Symptoms.
- Few bowel movements of less than three times a week.
- Hard or small stools.
- Bloating.
- A feeling that everything didn't come out after going to the toilet.
- Increased difficulty and straining when passing stool.
Remedies for Constipation.
- Drink lots of water ( try warm liquids eg tea especially in the morning).
- Include dietary fibre in your meals.
- Exercise regularly.
- Avoid caffeine as they can cause dehydration.
- Cut back in dairy products if they cause constipation for you.
- Limit your use of laxatives, use only when necessary.
- Don't ignore the urge to poop.
- Reduce stress around you as much as possible.
Points to Note.
Make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible when;
- You have severe pain with bowel movements.
- Blood in your stool.
- Severe, persistent abdominal pain and bloating.
- Can't pass stool.
